Her father was a coppersmith and instructed this craft in a local high school. Her grandparents were weavers and potters. At the age of 15 her family emigratee to the United States. In Chicago, while earning her livelihood in the garment industry, she attended evening classes and studied painting and sculpture. At the age of 20, she married William Pillin. While her husband was employed in the retail book business, she continued to paint in oil and watercolor. A one-woman show in the Chicago art institute received encouraging critical response. Ms. Pillin enrolled in a class of pottery at the Hull House, Chicago’s historic settlement house. There she made a beginning toward learning various techniques such as making pots from slab and coil, on pottery wheel or in plaster molds. (Aside from this experience she is entirely self-taught.) In 1948 the Pillins moved to LA where they established a pottery studio in a backyard garage and Ms. Pillin proceeded to develop the painterly approach to her work that has become her heralded trademark. (To achieve a delicate calligraphy, she often plucked the brush leaving only a few hairs. By sponging, graffito and banding she accomplished a wide variety of textures.) William Pillin worked closely with Polia in the production of art pottery. William assisted Polia by throwing and firing pottery and assisting with the development of glazes. In recent years, appreciation for Polia Pillin pottery has mushroomed as collectors worldwide vie for examples of her wonderful work. Free shipping on this item.
