Product Description:

Pond Farm Pottery Vase Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage Pond Farm studio art pottery vase. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This hand thrown piece is approximately 4 3/4 inches tall; it has a rim width of about 5 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 1 pound 8.2 ounces. The interior, rim, and upper exterior have a blue glaze; the rest of the exterior is unglazed brown clay with areas of whitish glaze. The exterior is ribbed, and this pot rests on a small foot. There are green felt pads beneath, as found. This vase would be an uncommon addition to a collection of vintage studio ceramics. Identification Beneath, this vintage pot has the incised jug cipher mark which was used at the Pond Farm pottery. It is attributed to Marguerite Wildenhain, founder of Pond Farm. The inventory label from the previous collector is intact beneath. Wildenhain is an important, well-known, listed artist. She is listed on AskART and on Vasefinder, and her works have been exhibited by many museums. Per the Vasefinder Museum and the Robert V. Fullerton Museum, Marguerite Wildenhain (1896-1985) was born in Lyon, France. Starting in 1914, she studied sculpture at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin. In 1919, she commenced studies at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where she studied with Max Krehan and Gerhard Marcks. Wildenhain taught at the Municipal School for Arts and Crafts in Halle-Saale, where she was head of the ceramics program. She relocated to Putten, Holland during the 1930s, where she had a studio with her husband. She moved to the United States in 1940, settling in northern California. Wildenhain taught at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. She moved to Pond Farm in 1942, in Guerneville, California (north of San Francisco). Summer workshops commenced in 1949. At Pond Farm, she taught some of the greatest artists from around the world. Wildenhain exhibited at the Nationals during 1940, 1946, 1947, and 1950. Condition This pot looks very good overall, with very light wear. There are no post-production cracks. To the sharp, exterior "shoulder" edge, there is a very small (approximately 1/16 inch by 1/8 inch) chip (see Photo 5). This sharp edge has minor glaze wear in other areas. To the base, as shown in Photo 4, there is a curved firing fissure which does not go through to the interior (not a post-production crack). Variations in glazing are as made. Please review the photos, and ask any questions you may have prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1.
